The Joy of Giving

Though all of us contribute to our communities in different ways throughout the year, the holidays often illuminate the impact of extending simple gifts to others. That was the case when some of our branch offices reached out in the spirit of giving.

Our Hillsboro, Scappoose and Netarts branch offices collectively adopted a family through the local VA Clinic and Managing Principal Broker George Huertas shared this heartwarming story…

A local former soldier (a single dad with two children) didn’t know how he was going to (1) feed his children a Christmas meal, and (2) have any gifts for his 17 and 12 year old children. When the VA social worker approached them with our offer the father was ecstatic, as he was worried about providing any gifts for the children and told the social worker that he wanted us to just take care of the kids, not him.Holiday tree

The gift requests from the kids included some clothes, a xbox game, and if possible a laptop computer for the daughter who would be hopefully attending college next year. The Dad made no request for himself. After some digging by an astute social worker, he found that the Dad could use some gloves. Fortunately, our Pru crew was able to deliver enough food for several Christmas meals, six xbox games, a $500 Fred Meyer gift card, a laptop computer, and a new pair of gloves for Dad.

“The former soldier walked with a noticeable limp and was so appreciative,” says George. “He and I exchanged a few words as he fought back tears, which ultimately, was a battle he couldn’t win.”

In Longview, the Prudential Northwest Properties team delivered lovingly wrapped “Holiday Care Packages” for homeless and at-risk youth served through Transitional Youth. Each box contained items such as hand warmers, a hat & gloves, toothbrushes & toothpaste, socks, hot cocoa & hot cider packs, lip balm and granola bars; every day things we take for granted, but that a homeless youth would cherish.

These kinds of stories are what make the holidays so joyful. Thanks to everyone who played a role in brightening the holidays for others.

Wishing you a healthy and very happy new year from all of us at Prudential Northwest Properties!
